The Art of Awareness Blog Hop

Today is a special day - it's the Art of Awareness blog hop, organised by Lori Anderson and Heather Millican. I expect most of you are familiar with both of these wonderful ladies - Lori of the infamous Bead Soup Blog Parties and Heather is the bead artist behind Swoondimples, some of my absolute favourite art beads to work with. More importantly, they are two of the sweetest people that I have the good fortune to know, and I'm so glad that the art bead world has allowed me to get to know both of them and call them my friends!

This hop was definitely a blog hop with a twist. Everyone who signed up got to choose and purchase a very special bean bead from Heather, in the colour and with wording of their choice. Because this is the Art of Awareness blog hop though, each colour had certain significance, and would have a special ribbon stamp on the back.

I've never made any awareness jewellery before - I don't think it's quite such a trend over here in the UK, in fact the only awareness colour I knew off the top of my head was pink for breast cancer awareness. But what some of you may not know is that my wife has MS, having being diagnosed back in 2010. She's very well with it the majority of the time, and although she has certain ongoing symptoms from previous attacks, for the most part she's - we've - been very fortunate. Other than the old having MS in the first place. That's still quite a bummer, it must be said!

The MS awareness colour is orange, and as you can see...

....orange is what I went for. We have been through quite a lot recently - talking and accepting Helen's MS as part of our lives (and if you are the partner of someone with a chronic illness then believe me, I know how much of that specific journey is yours too!), getting a balance between self-care and not allowing our lives to be entirely dominated and determined by the MS. Not living in fear - nor living in denial. I won't say that those things aren't part of our lives still, but we are getting better, day by day.

I asked Heather for the words Be Here Now. I think for those reasons I described above. I have more tendencies towards living fearfully and Helen has more tendencies towards living in denial, but we both have found that we need to stop, take a breath, and be in the moment.

Be.
Here.
Now.

Yes, Helen has MS. Yes, it is unfair and can be a big challenge to live with it as a not exactly welcome presence within our little family. Yes, MS could have terrible potential possibilities for our future. But these are not certain by any means. Nothing is set in stone.

And whatever the future holds, that fact is that right now, Helen is well. Right now, that is our reality, and that is something to hold on to. To focus on. To fully embrace.

Neither daily panicking about the future, nor constantly trying to be superhuman to prove that MS isn't defining us is a good way to live. All we can do is stop, breath, and be here now.

If you want to read about my actual design process, check out my post over on Art Bead Scene!

Thanks Lori and Heather for organising this great event. Quite a personal one for me! Now take a minute if you can to check out what some of the others created:

soup's up

Today I opened two very special packages:

- one from Jade Scott which I'm so glad has arrived - it means I can play along with the blog hop Lorelei is organising - and secondly from my bead soup partner, Queen Bead herself (sorry, truly terrible pun - I'm British, I can't help it ;-)) Lori Anderson

She was so generous as to send me two bead soups! In really pretty packaging, complete with tiny little frilly circles telling me exactly what everything is.

I'll let the photos speak for themselves. {NB You will notice that the pink soup photo is a little yellow-ish....I took all the other photos when I got in from work today, and then a private pupil turned up for her singing lesson before I had had a chance to fully unpack the pink soup, hence the poor light I had to work with post-lesson!}

Sabrina and Rebecca's Bead Soup

Sabrina's soup has arrived! She's going to blog about it tonight I think. She says she already has loads of ideas...eek! I better get started. I will post my pictures of her soup but I'll wait until after she has revealed it later today. Until then, there's a sneak peek on this wee button....you can see we went for similar colours! Sabrina's beautiful beads are on the right, and some of the soup that I sent is on the left. Elise Canning rose, pre-war ceramic flowers from an unknown Scottish artist.

I've decided to do a link so it's easy to find our Bead Soup posts - check out my ungainly button to the right-hand side of my blog! I am soooo not computer savvy; I thought about trying to do a lovely tab at the top of the page like so many of you have....couldn't work that out....then I thought of doing a button - well, I have worked that out (probably in the most round about way but as long as you get there in the end, right?) but it's a bit too big for my side bar. Not sure how to fix that.....but it still does the trick! Here is the button I created:

Obviously, I can't work out how to make this picture a live link....but if you click the one on the side bar, it will take you to all the posts relating to Sabrina and my particular Bead Soup Swap.

Whilst I'm here, I'd like to also say a massive thank you to the wonderfully wonderful Lori Anderson. Wow. She is a force of nature! I can't believe just how much work she's putting in - every time we do a Bead Soup Swap but especially this time around with not only 360+ participants but also so much on her personal plate. We really appreciate everything that you do Lori! THANK YOU. Lori recently received her own personal bead soup - check that out here.

If you're participating in the Bead Soup Swap, I hope you're having as much fun as I am :-)

Sabrina Staub

Meet Sabrina, my Bead Soup Swap Party partner! I am so excited that Lori has paired us together.

Something you don't know about my family is that my Mum used to live in Switzerland, back in the late 60s/early 70s. She worked there before going to university and then went back to work for the summers inbetween her university semesters. She lived and worked in Zurich (sorry, I don't know how to create an umlaut on my keyboard!) and still has lots of friends in Switzerland round that area. We used to visit quite often (every 2 or 3 years) when I was growing up as Mum had, and still has such strong connections. I haven't been since I was 18 (12 years! Horrifique! I'm so old...) but....my Mum, sister and my partner and I are holidaying in Zurich and Valatta (a small alpine town just outside Zurich) in September.

So when I had an email from Sabrina in Basel, I was over the moon! How wonderfully serendipitous. We may even manage a meet up when I go over, depending on our schedule (which will be dictated mainly by my Mum, she has bad arthritis and her mobility is often poor) as Basel in the next canton over from Zurich. I am excited! Emailing Sabrina has also given me a chance to practice my German....which I love but am NOT good at. My Mum is fluent (still!) in Swiss-German and I used to speak a very little when I was wee but it is long forgotten now. So I've been trying to write some of my emails in German whenever I have contacted Sabrina. Good practice indeed!

Another reason I'm so thrilled about this swap is that Sabrina is a pretty awesome lampwork artist. How totally fab! Anyone who has ever read this blog before will know I adore lampwork beads and have a bit of an addiction.....her work is stunning; cool and clean and colourful, and really, really beautiful.

Check out her blog, her website and her DaWanda shop. I hope you are all as lucky as I am with your swap partners!

Here's a sneak peek of what will be in the post tomorrow......x x x

Fairy tale bead swap

Hi and welcome to our magical mystery fairy tale bead swap! Those of us who are members of the bead swap party yahoo group decided to do a little bead swap amongst ourselves, this time with a fairy tale theme. I'm blogging from my phone as im away in rural England for a friend's hen do, so unfortunately I can't put any live links on this post. I will fix this as soon as I get on a computer but until then please check out Lori Anderson's blog for a list of everyone involved and links to their blogs.

My fantastic partner in the swap has been Sally Russick and she sent me the most amazing package of goodies....totally overwhelming, in a very good way! Please check out what she has made with the selection box i sent her. The fairy tale she picked for me was Little Red Riding Hood, a very good choice for me as it was one of the tales featured in Into the Woods, the musical I took part in earlier this year. She is so kind, she also through in a bunch of goodies that she thought I would like - and you were right Sally, I loved everything you sent!

I love all the colours I received and decided to pull out three of them - the lovely green shades, bronzey copper rondelles and of course, the red Czech faceted beads. I used copper wire and a hand forged copper clasp from sugar spun beads on etsy

and finished it off with a beautiful Marsha Neal focal

which I bought during the last beads of clay blog hop.

I am pleased with the result - I imagine the three red beads as little red riding hood tiptoeing through the woods on her way to her grandmother's.

I also completely fell in love with the beautiful silvery clear faceted Czech ovals Sally sent me - look at their sparkle!

Thanks Sally for providing such beautiful inspiration! I still have loads left over and will try to complete some more themed pieces using these over the next couple of months - watch this space!

Just as a small post script, I must have had fairy tales on the brain because look what I came up with last week......
