The Art of Awareness Blog Hop

Today is a special day - it's the Art of Awareness blog hop, organised by Lori Anderson and Heather Millican. I expect most of you are familiar with both of these wonderful ladies - Lori of the infamous Bead Soup Blog Parties and Heather is the bead artist behind Swoondimples, some of my absolute favourite art beads to work with. More importantly, they are two of the sweetest people that I have the good fortune to know, and I'm so glad that the art bead world has allowed me to get to know both of them and call them my friends!

This hop was definitely a blog hop with a twist. Everyone who signed up got to choose and purchase a very special bean bead from Heather, in the colour and with wording of their choice. Because this is the Art of Awareness blog hop though, each colour had certain significance, and would have a special ribbon stamp on the back.

I've never made any awareness jewellery before - I don't think it's quite such a trend over here in the UK, in fact the only awareness colour I knew off the top of my head was pink for breast cancer awareness. But what some of you may not know is that my wife has MS, having being diagnosed back in 2010. She's very well with it the majority of the time, and although she has certain ongoing symptoms from previous attacks, for the most part she's - we've - been very fortunate. Other than the old having MS in the first place. That's still quite a bummer, it must be said!

The MS awareness colour is orange, and as you can see...

....orange is what I went for. We have been through quite a lot recently - talking and accepting Helen's MS as part of our lives (and if you are the partner of someone with a chronic illness then believe me, I know how much of that specific journey is yours too!), getting a balance between self-care and not allowing our lives to be entirely dominated and determined by the MS. Not living in fear - nor living in denial. I won't say that those things aren't part of our lives still, but we are getting better, day by day.

I asked Heather for the words Be Here Now. I think for those reasons I described above. I have more tendencies towards living fearfully and Helen has more tendencies towards living in denial, but we both have found that we need to stop, take a breath, and be in the moment.

Be.
Here.
Now.

Yes, Helen has MS. Yes, it is unfair and can be a big challenge to live with it as a not exactly welcome presence within our little family. Yes, MS could have terrible potential possibilities for our future. But these are not certain by any means. Nothing is set in stone.

And whatever the future holds, that fact is that right now, Helen is well. Right now, that is our reality, and that is something to hold on to. To focus on. To fully embrace.

Neither daily panicking about the future, nor constantly trying to be superhuman to prove that MS isn't defining us is a good way to live. All we can do is stop, breath, and be here now.

If you want to read about my actual design process, check out my post over on Art Bead Scene!

Thanks Lori and Heather for organising this great event. Quite a personal one for me! Now take a minute if you can to check out what some of the others created:

New beads...

After a few rather wordy posts from me, I thought you might prefer a more picture-heavy one.....featuring some of the lovely things that have arrived with me recently and will shortly be turned into unique art jewellery (although I reserve the right to hoard. I really do).
Wonderful handmade beads from Flowerjasper Lampwork Glass. Are these not just the most perfect shade of blue?

Fabulous chunky resin nuggets I snagged in a destash. Chunky and organic, but light because they are resin. Loving these a lot!

A whole lot of love from Swoondimples.....

Sweet tweets from Jettabug Jewelry. Her work is so folky and whimsical - perfect for my jewellery.

Belfast is not overrun with bead shops.....in fact, Curious makes up 50% of those of which I know about! However, it does have a nice general craft shop which I visited for the first time a couple of weeks ago. As is often the case with more general craft shops, the bead selection leans toward the cheap and cheerful, but I was rather taken with these pretty pacific opal nailheads. Lovely colour and I have a bit of a thing for nailhead beads.

Last but definitely not least, some tiny tassels, again from Swoondimples. I bought these partly because who doesn't love a wee tassel? But also because they remind me of one of my current favourite songs. I'm trying to hunt down a print with the title quote on it for my studio 'Follow your arrow wherever it points' - haven't found quite the right one yet, but I'm on the look out! I must confess I do like the odd bit of folky country music.

Song-ing followed by Bead-ing

Dear oh dear - here I am again, feeling like it's been far too long since I last blogged. It is an all-too-familiar feeling it seems! I always have plans for blog posts, but time runs away and I lose track of everything.....sounds like the rest of my life too! This time, I have a slight excuse - I have been preparing for and performing in a concert over in Glasgow, in the beautiful University Chapel, which was this past weekend.

Now, it wasn't a huge concert and my part in it was fairly minor. But, it was the first time I had sung in a long time - and I don't just mean in a concert, I mean not along with the radio, not in the shower; practically not a single note has passed my lips since I moved to Belfast. I seemed to lose my voice along with the move back in September. I have felt somehow silenced for the past 7 months - as if I had my throat stopped up. But a friend asked a couple of weeks ago if I was free for a concert he was fixing, he was in a pinch for my voice-type, and so I decided that a fairly low-key event would be something I could do.

Of course, my stamina was at a literal all-time low, and the prospect of singing in public after so long was daunting enough in itself - coupled with my usual nerves! But I practiced, and I went and I sang, and god-damn it if I didn't do ok after only a minor psychological melt-down the morning of the performance. It felt like a real achievement for me at this time, and (dare I say it) I was proud of myself for taking even a small step out of my void of silence.

So that has taken my mind slightly away from blogging and suchlike. The Curious Bead Shop has to continue, as do custom jewellery orders, so the things that fall by the wayside, albeit it temporarily, are often social media-based. I know, I should really figure out an automated system....but I haven't yet. One day....

Anyway, I arrived back in Belfast yesterday and spent the day packing up the weekend's orders. I then gave myself the evening off (that's allowed, right?) and did what my brain likes to zone out to - made some bracelets. Here are the spoils of my mental unwind ~

I'm pretty pleased with them. I can't tell you just how happy I am to have more of these gorgeous flower beads back in my life. Just in time for summer fair preparation. I have a few new colours on the way too and I am very excited to get my hands on them. I'm writing this up on my phone, on the bus (why am I incapable of organising my time?!) so I will add full links later, but for now, the art beads come from ~

BTW...plus update...

Ugh, I'm off work today with the lurgs....nasty throat (kind of a pain in the bum when you're a singer/singing teacher!), glands up and feeling generally spaced out and grotty. So I'm lying in my bed, watching crappy tv (and for crappy, read awesome 90s detective drama boxed sets....I do love some boxed set action) and thought I'd shoot a few quick pics for Bead Table Wednesday. I've recently discovered the wonders of Picnik and have been enjoying making some collages....so here's another. I've played around with a couple of filters as you can see too....

Czech glass beads from BeadandRibbon

And here is a small update....I've had a quick peak in between troughs and here are a couple of things I came up with using gorgeous components from Floridity....

A necklace (available now in my Etsy shop) and a wee bracelet - I want to work out how to hang the bracelet from my mannequin so for now you can only see the front....the back is a double length of chain from MissFickleMedia, sweet and simple. The necklace features Vintaj chain, sea moss Czech rondelles and a lovely fat Green Amethyst briolette from PreciousSparkleBeads. Green Amethyst is a really beautiful stone, such a delicate shade and it has a gorgeous clarity.
